United Way’s advocacy work is focused on creating positive change in education, income, and health public policies by:

  • Developing relationships with elected officials from both parties at all levels of government.
  • Sharing what we have learned from our initiatives and heard from the community.
  • Focusing on where we align with others and working with allies to collectively drive change.

Advocacy goes beyond volunteering and giving in order to drive long-term policy changes. More than 700 local United Way Advocates communicate UWMD’s priorities to policymakers and advocate for improvements to current policies.

We advocate for quality early childhood education

A child’s early years have a big impact on the rest of their lives. Through our advocacy work, we have helped triple the number of training hours for child care professionals from 8 to 24 hours, providing local kids with higher quality education and care from a young age.

We advocate for fair lending practices

In Texas, payday and auto title lending is a huge, unregulated industry. Weekly, over 130 individuals in our area lose their cars to auto-title lenders. In 2011, we worked with The City of Dallas to adopt the first local ordinance in our state around payday and auto title lending, and 24 cities have followed our lead!

We advocate for proven practices that prevent and reduce obesity

More than one third of children in Dallas between the ages of 10 and 17 are obese or at risk of becoming obese. Through our work, we protected Fitnessgram testing in schools and passed a bill that created a fitness sub-committee within each school district.
