Facing Eviction? You Can Still Apply for Rental Assistance

The Centers for Disease Control just announced an extended nationwide eviction moratorium, preventing people from being kicked out of rental homes through October 3. However, in the coming weeks, the rule may be challenged in federal court, placing millions of Americans at risk of being evicted. Luckily, there is good news in North Texas: Our neighbors who are facing eviction still can apply for rental assistance through the Dallas Rental Assistance Collaborative (DRAC).


If you need help with your rent and utility costs, you can apply for assistance through DRAC here. (In addition, if your landlord has opened an eviction case against you, you can apply for the Texas Eviction Diversion Program, which allows courts to delay eviction for 60 days.)


In the last 16 months, DRAC has helped thousands of families remain in their homes. Since the start of the pandemic, United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, along with our DRAC partner organizations, has worked to meet the needs of people in our community who are facing the threat of eviction—many of whom lost their jobs and income because of the pandemic.

As the threat of eviction continues to loom large for many of our neighbors, here are the latest updates about the program:

  • There is no longer a cap on the dollar amount of assistance an eligible household can receive. Previously, this limit was $1,500 a month.
  • If you are eligible, you can use the funds for both rent and utilities.
  • Your citizenship status is not a factor in your eligibility.

Nearly a year and a half into the pandemic, many of our North Texas neighbors are still feeling the effects of this unprecedented situation every day.

Consider the statistics around potential evictions: The New York Times reports that 16.4% of renting households in Dallas County owe back rent. In Denton and Collin counties, that percentage is 11.3% and 11.7%, respectively.

As Ashley Brundage, executive director of housing stability and senior vice president of community impact at United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, explains, being evicted is a devastating event that disrupts the life of the entire family.

“Eviction causes a family to lose their home,” she said. “They are expelled from their community, their children have to switch schools, it causes job loss and—perhaps not surprisingly—it can affect people’s mental health. A home is fundamental to a family’s success in school, jobs and accessing health care. Our community was experiencing a housing crisis prior to the pandemic, and many families continue to experience the impact of the economic shutdown. Now is the time to continue to come together to help families stay in their homes.”
