Make Volunteering a Year-Round Habit

It’s that time of year: When the holiday season inspires millions of people across the country to volunteer their time and talents. At United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, we’re so grateful for the thousands of volunteers who are part of our Live United movement, working right alongside us as we improve access to education, income and health.

If you’re interested in giving back to our community this holiday season, now is a great time to get started and resolve to make volunteering a year-round habit.

Why Volunteer?

Donating your time is one of the most rewarding ways to give back to the community. Not only do you get to see the impact of your efforts, often in real time, you also enjoy being part of something bigger than yourself—a movement to make North Texas a better place for everyone.

Many of our volunteers ask us if there is a “best” time of the year to give back. Our answer is: whenever you have a few extra hours and feel inspired to be part of the change! Over the holidays, some nonprofits see a more than 40% increase in new volunteers compared to the rest of the year. This is incredible—and it’s also proof that there is plenty of opportunity throughout the other months of the year to raise your hand for a program or event that interests you.

Why United Way?

Becoming a United Way volunteer offers several benefits:

  • Broad impact: Because our work focuses on education, income and health, you’re able to give back in ways that impact a large portion of our community.
  • A local focus: Our movement is about creating change right here at home, so you know that your volunteer efforts will always benefit your neighbors in North Texas.
  • A variety of options: We lead many programs throughout the year, so it’s easy to find volunteer events that suit your interests and are either in-person or virtual.
  • Lasting change: While we occasionally hold volunteer events that address immediate needs, such as in the wake of the February 2021 winter storm, most of our work addresses systemic challenges and promotes measurable, long-term change—which is exactly what will make North Texas a region where everyone can thrive.

Hear from just a few of our recent volunteers about why they volunteer:

  • “Being able to give back to my community is about staying connected to the people, the friends, the family that I adore, and really just uplifting the people who haven’t had the same luxuries as I have during the pandemic. – Kelly Ann
  • “Volunteering with United Way is a great way to create positive change that we can all be proud of in our community. Helping others and making a difference for those in need is why I volunteer, and I’m proud to do my part.” – Laporchia
  • “I love volunteering with young kids, just because they have so much energy, and I’m very passionate about STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics). Dallas has a lot of low-income communities and Latino communities, which is where I came from, and getting that visibility to kids is so important.” – Manny

Where to Volunteer?

United Way of Metropolitan Dallas offers a variety of volunteer opportunities throughout the year. Click below to sign up for one of our current programs:

  • Send notes to isolated seniors: Submit handwritten cards, homemade drawings or paintings, or notes of encouragement to bring holiday cheer to local seniors who live in isolation.
  • Holiday toy drive: Send holiday toys to babies and young children who are part of our H.O.P.E.S. and Texas Home Visiting programs, which support parents in creating safe and healthy home environments.
  • Fight food insecurity: Donate a little time to fight poverty and hunger in North Texas by stocking the CitySquare food pantry or assisting with meal service at Cornerstone Kitchen.

The best way to broaden your volunteer impact is to sign up throughout the year—not just over the holidays. At United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, we’ll host new engaging volunteer opportunities in the coming months, including Reading Day in March, summer meals programs, back-to-school supply drives and more. Stay tuned to our volunteer opportunities calendar for details.
