Resolve to be Part of Lasting Change in 2021

Research has shown that most New Year’s resolutions last approximately three weeks. Which means that by the time you read this article, it’s possible you’ve already abandoned your pledge to exercise more/eat less junk/read a novel every month. That doesn’t mean you can’t make a new resolution that reaches farther than your own front door. United Way of Metropolitan Dallas makes it easy to do just that by giving you the opportunity to improve the education, income and health of our North Texas neighbors.

If last year showed us anything, it’s that we’re stronger together. That’s why United Way is encouraging individuals to unite to create the kind of North Texas where everyone has the opportunity to live their best life. In order to do that, it needs organizations and individuals to commit to driving positive long-term change.

We call our 10-year blueprint for improving education, income and health in North Texas Aspire United 2030. With a vision of giving every resident, regardless of race or ZIP code, the opportunity and access needed to develop their full potential, it’s created a movement to ensure that:

All North Texas students graduate high school prepared for success in college or career.
All North Texas families are financially stable.
All North Texans are living long, healthy lives.

Be the change you want to see

So where do you fit in? Basically everywhere.

People often have a hard time figuring out how to help or determining what they can do that will truly matter in the lives of others. United Way has a range of opportunities for North Texas residents who are ready to get involved.

A financial contribution today is an investment in a brighter future. When you give to United Way, you strengthen education, income and health right here in our community. For example, a $36 gift provides a child with 12 books a year, preparing them for school and early reading. A $100 investment helps provide training to an early childhood professional.

The most reliable way to address community needs in the long term is to speak up to public officials about the importance of creating a more equitable North Texas—and what policy changes are needed to do that. When you sign up for advocacy alerts, you’ll get information on top policy priorities and when and how to connect with elected officials.

Dedicating time to serve others in the community can have an immediate benefit. From donating school supplies to reading to a child, homeless outreach to educational events, volunteer opportunities exist across different areas of need, so you can choose something that speaks to your heart. (And though most in-person volunteer events are on hold due to COVID-19, they will be back. In the meantime, there are opportunities to volunteer virtually.) Our volunteering platform keeps users up to date with monthly opportunities, so you can be part of fulfilling the United Way mission to drive transformative change and advance racial equity in North Texas. All you need is a free account and a willing heart.

Choose how you’d like to be involved. There’s no donation or effort too large or too small. As with all resolutions, what matters is that you find what’s right for you, stay with it over time and make it part of your lifestyle.
