Summer Meals Kickoff 2019

United Way of Metropolitan Dallas Hosts Summer Meals Kickoff
Event Encourages Families to Fight Student Hunger by Utilizing Free Meal Sites

DALLAS – Summertime is traditionally a fun break from the school year for children. But sadly, summer break can also mean a time of hunger for thousands of North Texas students who rely on school meal programs. To combat summer hunger, United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, in partnership with Equal Heart, will host a Summer Meals Kickoff on Tuesday, June 11that Jubilee Park & Community Center in Dallas. Presented by Mr. Cooper and supported by Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes, the event will feed hundreds of Dallas children, while generating awareness of available summer meals sites across the region. The effort is designed to ensure students who rely on subsidized meal programs during the school year continue to get daily, nutritious, filling food during summer months.  In 2018, a total of 2,635,276 summer meals were served in North Texas.

“Summertime for kids should be about getting outside, playing with friends and having fun, not about being hungry,” said Jennifer Sampson, McDermott-Templeton President and CEO, United Way of Metropolitan Dallas. “Maintaining a healthy body and brain with proper nutrition is critical to a child’s well-being, and United Way and our partners are committed to feeding bodies, minds and brighter futures. Together, we’re building stronger communities by putting opportunity in the hands of North Texas families.”

More than 300,000 Dallas County children – a population that could fill AT&T Stadium three times – are at risk of going hungry every day this time of year.  And while 57% of North Texans children access free or reduced meals during the school year, only 14% take advantage of summer meal programs. Member organizations of the North Texas Summer & Supper Council, led by United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and Texas Hunger Initiatives, have come together to increase awareness of numerous free summer meal programs, and stress the importance of good nutrition for kids throughout the year.

The Summer Meals Kickoff will mobilize more than 100 volunteers from Mr. Cooper, Enterprise Holdings and United Way to support Equal Heart in serving children through their Summer Food Service Program. Volunteers will also organize water activities, arts and crafts, field games and music to engage children. Frosted Flakes’ beloved Tony the Tiger will be on hand to help encourage kids to get active through the series of summer fun stations that stress the importance of maintaining a healthy body and brain. Kellogg’s has been faithful partner in combating summer hunger through a series of grants, recently expanding efforts by incorporating the Frosted Flakes brand. Research shows that events like this can be important drivers of summer meal participation, alerting neighborhood residents that community sites are open and offer a fun and easy way to get a nutritious meal. Throughout the summer, volunteers are expected to serve meals to 60,000 North Texas children.

“Every child should be able to experience the joy that summertime brings and never have to worry where they are going to get their next meal from,” said Kelly Ann Doherty, Chief People and Communications Officer at Mr. Cooper. “The Mr. Cooper team is proud to be a part of this important initiative, bringing awareness to summer meals programs and creating engaging opportunities for families in our community to access them.”
