Emmanuel didn’t like to read at all. Then he met Miss Shelly.
Emmanuel was behind in his reading level at the beginning of the school year. At first, he didn’t even want to try. Then he and Shelly started working together as part of Reading Partners, a program funded in part by United Way of Metropolitan Dallas.
This program provides weekly reading mentors to work with students one-on-one. With early involvement, passionate volunteers impart the skills and encouragement needed to put kids on the path to graduation.
So far, Emmanuel has been through 39 different lessons. What’s more, he’s grown confident, acquired a love of reading and greatly increased his chances of success in school and in life.
